  • Controller to specify behavior and allow observation and analysis
  • Mechanism to allocate over time
  • Mechanism to tolerate faults

• We had an object oriented type of person

• We had ‘intelligent agent’ competitors

• So we did a thing that was more intelligent than the agents and more object oriented than the object folks - but small, fast, and cheap
