AT&T SUPPORTS "ISRAEL DEFENSE FORCES" AS KILLING OF PALESTINIANS CONTINUES
November 13, 2000
On October 26, 2000 The Israeli military ("IDF") announced that AT&T, the American telecommunications giant, will host its website.
The decision follows an attack by computer hackers which knocked down the IDF website. A statement issued by the Israeli military October 26 said "In order to secure the availability and accessibility of the [IDF] site at all times, the professional web masters in charge of the IDF site turned to several other companies, from which AT&T was chosen as an additional provider together with Netvision [an Israeli company]." (Statement on http://www.idf.il) This was also reported in The Jerusalem Post.
At this time, the IDF website is being used to propagate justifications for the mass killings and repression of Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories. For the past month, Israeli occupation forces attacks have killed more than 200 Palestinians including over 40 children, and injured thousands. Israeli forces are surrounding most Palestinian cities, causing shortages of food and denying people freedom of movement, even to seek medical treatment.
These actions continue despite almost universal condemnation by the international community, and the United Nations Security Council, General Assembly, UN Human Rights Committee, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and many other international and national organizations.
Persons who feel that they cannot in good conscience continue to do business with a company that steps in to assist such a massive human rights abuser as the Israeli military may decide to take their long distance telephone, calling card and Internet provider business elsewhere.
AT&T is the largest provider of long distance telephone service, and makes huge profits from international calls to the Middle East.
Customers who decide they want to change their long distance carriers can do so by calling one of AT&T's competitors.
Some of them are:
ATX - A CoreCom Company
Call: Greg Wood at 888-731-3421
This company (ATX) will provide a bonus if you sign up by returning five (5%) percent of your long distance charges to Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, in support of its educational efforts. Businesses may qualify for even lower rates based on current spending. ATX will be competitive and can provide lower than current rates from any other carrier. The contribution of 5% will still apply for business accounts.
