Dear <student>:

Andrew Briney of the Information Security Magazine forwarded your

Hello I am a university student from Australia studying Internet
protection for access to child pornography. I was wondering if your
magazine has published an article in relation to this topic before; if
not would you be able to direct me to any material which would be
useful to me? I would be grateful for any help no matter how small.<

Visit the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) site at
<http://aclu.org> and in particular their Free Speech page at
<http://aclu.org/issues/freespeech/hmfs.html> for many links to
resources about censorship, including several briefing papers on the
fundamentals of U.S. constitutional protection of speech.

On

l> there are several links about the Secure Internet Filtering
Consortium (SIFT).

Visit <http://www.icsa.net/services/consortia/sift/> for a White Paper
describing Internet filtering products and for the minutes of several
meetings of SIFT.

On <http://www.icsa.net/services/consortia/sift/ten_ques.shtml>, Peter
Tippett has written "Ten Questions Parents Should Ask" that will help
improve communications between parents and their children as they use
the Internet.

On <http://www.icsa.net/news/press_room/consortia_pr.shtml> there are
links to several press releases about SIFT.

You will want to visit the sites of the companies providing Net
filtering software. Companies involved are listed on
<http://www.icsa.net/services/consortia/sift/siftmem.shtml>.

Visit the following sites for detailed information on the legal
battles involving censorship of Internet access:

Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC): <http://www.epic.org>. =

In particular, see <http://www.epic.org/free_speech/> for several
reports of interest.

For information about the Blue Ribbon Campaign against Net Censorship,
see the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) at <http:<//www.eff.org>
and in particular, <http://www.eff.org/blueribbon.html>.

Declan McCullough has been writing on Net censorship for several
years; see his site at <http://www.y2kculture.com/politech/> to
subscribe to his PoliTech mailing list (still using the prefix FC: on
his messages because it used to be called "Fight Censorship").

The WIRED Magazine site <http://www.wired.com> produced 196 hits when
I searched on "censorship".

Another technology used in helping parents keep track of their
children's activities is logging. =

Finally, here's a list of recent articles of interest drawn from the
Computer Select Database (a superb subscription service available from
The Gale Group
<http://www.informationaccess.com/biznet/cswbcd_h.htm>). This list is
drawn from the April CD.
