7 September 1999  Cracker Pleads Guilty to attacking NATO Server and
                  Other Government Systems

A 19-year-old cracker has pleaded guilty to charges of attacking an
assortment of US government Web pages, and admitted that he had offered
advice to others on attacking the White House Web site in May.  He faces
up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and restitution payments.

6 September 1999 Plans to Restrict NIPRNet Access will be Developed Soon
The Defense Department wants all unofficial access points to the
Non-Classified IP Router Network (NIPRNet) closed by December 15th. 
Unless granted a Defense Department waiver, users will be required to
enter the system through one of its six official gateways.

4 September 1999 Questions Linger Over Possibility of Microsoft Backdoor
Microsoft has denied that a second encryption key, named NSAKEY, in
Windows' security is designed to allow the National Security Agency
backdoor access.  Privacy advocates say parts of Microsoft's explanation
just don't make sense.

in China, and those belonging to Serbs and Serb sympathizers.

1 September 1999 Teen Cracker Arrested A member of the cracker group
Global Hell was arrested on August 30.  The group has been the focus of
a months-long investigation.  Chad Davis, 19, is charged with gaining
illegal access to an unclassified US Army Web server and with altering
files that would have disclosed his intrusion.  If convicted, Davis
faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
