A suspected Chinese spy ship passed through Japan?s Tsugaru Strait
during the night of May 23. While Chinese surveillance vessels are not
unusual around Japan, this was the first time one traveled through the
strait that separates Japan?s northern island of Hokkaido and the main
island, Honshu, a Japan Coast Guard (JCG) official reportedly told the
Japan Times. The movement of the Chinese vessel highlights growing
tensions between Japan and China, as each seeks to broaden the reach of
its naval forces.

On May 14, a Chinese Yanbing class icebreaker was spotted off of
Tsushima Island in the Korea Strait. The ship remained off of Japan?s
southern Kyushu Island until May 21, when it began heading north through
the Sea of Japan, toward the Tsugaru Strait.

Reportedly armed with 37-millimeter guns and fitted for intelligence
gathering, the vessel did not violate Japanese territorial waters in
passing through the strait. However, a Japanese Hatsuyuki class
destroyer, equipped with Harpoon missiles and an anti-submarine
helicopter, was dispatched to monitor the ship in case it was spying.
