Serb Hackers Attack Network Solutions
By Steve Gold, Newsbytes
April 15, 2000

Network Solutions [NASDAQ:NSOL] was left holding the baby this week
after Serbian hackers appeared to have gained unauthorized access to a
small number of contact details on the Internet service provider's
database.

A report on the BBC news Web portal (http://news.bbc.co.uk ) says that
unknown Serbian hackers appear to have gained temporary
administrator-level access to around 50 high-profile Web sites.

The sites, which include those operated by Adidas and Manchester United,
a UK soccer team, were rebranded with the "Kosovo is Serbia" message and
a copy of the Kosovo double-headed eagle.

Reports suggest that many of the 50 or so sites were Central European,
but the media appears to have latched on to those Western sites that
were hacked and rebranded by the pro-Kosovan hackers.

Cheryl Reagan, a spokesperson for Network Solutions, told Newsbytes that
the firm became aware of the security problem earlier this week and the
matter is now under full investigation.

"The sites which were affected were those where the customers had
elected to take our lowest level of security," she said, adding that the
security level selected was where customers could change their
registration details by sending an e-mail.

"We are talking to our customers about security levels," she went on to
say, noting that higher levels of security, including the Guardian
highest level, do not involve extra fees being paid.

"Customers can elect which level of security they want when they
register and, of course, at any time after they register they can change
this," she said.

Reagan added that the total number of sites reported by the BBC and
other media as having been affected may be overstated.

"We think it is lower than the 50 or so claimed, but it's worth noting
that we've recently taken our ten millionth Internet domain name
registration," she said, adding that this puts matters in perspective.

In a related story, the Web site of the Serbian Ministry of Information
has reported that it and other Yugoslav sites had been taken over
recently by hackers.

The ministry said that "American-Albanian propagandists" had forged the
entire English version of its site on Wednesday.

"In a planned and malicious action, regularly registered Yugoslav sites
were taken over on the central server of an American firm involved in
the registration of the Internet domains," it added.
