Missing Hard Drives Found
The two missing hard drives with nuclear secrets have
been found at the Los Alamos lab, the Energy Department
said on Friday. "The hard drives missing at the Los
Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have been
located," it said in an official statement. The drives,
which contain highly sensitive technical information
on nuclear weapons design, including on U.S., Russian,
Chinese, and French systems, were found in the secure
area where they had been mislaid, ending a week-long
security alarm.

Cybersentries under GAO review
The General Accounting Office is starting a review of
the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center's
ability to fulfill its cyberattack analysis and warning
duties. The review follows a request by three members
of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Technology,
Terrorism and Government Information to look into the
NIPC's abilities to act as a central point for detection
and analysis of cyberattacks.

CSIS opens wallet to battle cyberterrorists
Canada's intelligence agency plans "significant
investments" in advanced technology to try to
keep pace with well-equipped terrorists and spies.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service said
in its annual report yesterday that the growing
use of modern communications, computers and
encryption by terrorists poses new challenges.
"The increasing availability of methods to
communicate quickly and securely has
significantly changed the playing field,"
says the CSIS report.

Hackers refine their head games
The message on the simple black T-shirts sold by
20-year-old ``Overdose'' from Las Vegas says much
of what you need to know about the three-day
computer hacking contest at RootFest. ``My only
crime is that of outsmarting you,'' it proclaimed.
RootFest, a convention for Midwest computer hackers
being held at St. Paul's RiverCentre, ends today.
Like more conventional conventions, it has its
speakers and seminars, its PowerPoint slide-shows
by day and its entertainment -- a rock band, of
course -- set for Thursday night.

Hybrid Apps Catch Network, System Attacks
Growing cyber threats from inside and outside the
firewall is spurring the rise of hybrid intrusion
detection systems (IDS) that detect network- and
system-related attacks. Extending its efforts to
forge tighter integration between network- and
host-based detection, Axent Technologies recently
unveiled the Prowler IDS Series, offering automated
configuration and reporting functions.
