Register.com scrambles to close security hole
Register.com, the second-largest domain name registrar, has
acknowledged a security problem that could have allowed people
to hijack others' Web sites. The problem allowed unauthorized
access to the security software Register.com and its business
partners use to manage Internet site information, such as a
customer's contact information or the numerical address
associated with a domain name. Spokeswoman Shonna Keogan said
the security vulnerability was fixed today.

Microsoft-tied groups report 'weird' incidents
Following efforts by a shadowy company to buy the office trash
of a pro-Microsoft Corp. trade group, a number of organizations
allied with the software giant said they too have been the
victims of suspicious incidents they believe are related to
their work with Microsoft.

Reno asks cyber Crime victims help government
U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno urged high-tech companies on
Monday to step up cooperation with law-enforcement officials
battling cyber crime. Acknowledging private-sector qualms about
divulging security breaches, America's top law officer vowed to
minimize the impact of federal investigations on cyber crime
victims.

Most Americans worried about hackers and cybercrime, poll says
More than two-thirds of Americans are concerned about the threat
of hackers and cybercriminals, says a poll released Monday at a
conference of technology executives and law enforcement officials.
``Americans are not satisfied with existing protections from
computer criminals,'' said Dick Brown, chairman of the technology
company EDS, which commissioned the poll. ``The future of the
cybermarketplace will depend, to a large degree, on safety and
security.''

Hostile countries probing U.S. networks, says Clinton aide
A top aide to President Clinton said Monday that unspecified
hostile countries were probing U.S. computer networks for ways
to spark mayhem if war broke out. ``This is not theoretical.
It's real,'' said Richard Clarke, the White House National
Security Council staff coordinator for security, infrastructure
protection and counter-terrorism.

Official Says US Faces Potential Electronic Pearl Harbor
The United States faces an "electronic Pearl Harbor" unless
government and industry jointly step up efforts to strengthen
the computer security safeguarding the nation's critical
infrastructure, a top US information security official said
today. "We have the equivalent today of enemy aircraft flying
over the target," National Coordinator for Security,
Infrastructure Protection and Counter-Terrorism Richard
Clarke said today during a panel discussion on cyber-threats.
The probing cyber-attacks that US defense officials have
identified as originating in enemy states may as well be spy
planes scanning for weak points in the nation's security,
Clarke said.

Cyberdefense mired in Cold War
The absence of a catastrophic cyberattack against the United
States has created a false sense of cybersecurity and has
allowed costly Cold War-era Pentagon programs to siphon money
from critically needed information technology and security
programs, a panel of experts warned last week. "We're still
mired in a Cold War-era defense spending mentality," said
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) at a symposium titled
"Technological Change and American Security" and sponsored
by The Brookings Institution.

Reflections on the Viral Wars
Viruses and other wildlife, so far, have been the product
of mischievous "wanton boys," not nihilists. The weaponry's
been conventional, not nuclear. And, self-limited in
destructive power, no virus yet has sought the annihilation
of the Information Society or the Internet. Probably, virus
designers don't want to destroy their own playground.
