USC won't block access to Napster
The University of Southern California says it will
not join other schools in blocking students' access
to the popular Napster Internet site, which lets
people swap music. The university made the
announcement Friday in response to a lawsuit filed
by the heavy metal rock band Metallica, which named
USC, Yale University and Indiana University as
defendants, accusing the schools of encouraging
students to pirate copyrighted music.

Linux open to backdoor password
Rogue account makes Red Hat=92s version vulnerable.
A team of Internet security researchers say
they=92ve found a serious security hole in the
most popular distribution of the Linux
operating system. According to Internet Security
Systems Inc., there=92s a backdoor account in Red
Hat=92s Linux that would let a computer intruder
access and alter files on most computers running
Red Hat=92s most recent version of Linux. But a
spokesperson for Red Hat downplayed the flaw,
saying few Red Hat users had been exposed to it.

New breed of cop will defend the Web
The feds are creating a new force of cybercops
to defend the Internet from hacker attacks like
the blitzkrieg that paralyzed some Web sites this
year. The cost of Internet crime has been growing
rapidly. In 1996, cyber crooks and hackers caused
an estimated $100 million in losses to businesses
and institutions. Last year, those losses leaped
to $266 million and threaten to reach $1 billion
annually during the next decade. The number of
computer intrusion cases investigated by the FBI
have doubled since 1998 to 1,154. To counter
Information Age criminals -- who include hackers,
cyber terrorists, embezzlers, credit card frauds
and pedophiles -- the Clinton administration to
develop up to 10 new regional computer forensic
labs and hire another 100 FBI Internet G-men and
68 U.S. attorneys to prosecute computer and child
pornography crimes.

Burma keeps tight rein on Internet
Dozens of key-tapping students stare intently at
computer screens in a cramped classroom three
floors up a crumbling colonial terrace in downtown
Rangoon. At the private Knowledge, Management and
Dedication Co. computer study center, these eager
teens learn everything from operating systems like
Microsoft Windows to programming. But there's one
glaring gap in the curriculum: the Internet. While
the rest of developing Asia is rushing headlong
into the information technology revolution, Burma's
unelected military rulers forbid cyberspace, fearing
it could open up a Pandora's box of dissent.

Biometric Authentication
Historically, usernames and passwords are the most
common form of authenticating computer users. They
are also both the worst management headache for IT
staff and the biggest network security hole in
existence. Many help desks handle more password
related calls than any other category. Users
routinely share their passwords with one another.
We have passwords on yellow sticky notes on the
monitor and under the keyboard. If you don't find
the password there, try the Rolodex=AE under "P" for
Password.
