-- 24 April 2000 Satellite Photo Site Cracked, Overloaded
Crackers and unexpectedly heavy traffic were to blame for a 36 hour
disruption of a web site offering satellite photos of Area 51, a secret
US Air Force compound in Nevada. The web site also provides satellite
photos of other locations around the world.

-- 23 April 2000 Experts Say to Give Canadian Teen a Break
Some security experts believe authorities should go easy on the Canadian
teenager arrested in connection with February's DDoS attacks.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/zd/20000423/tc/security_experts_give_mafiaboy_a_break_103.html
Editor's (Murray) Note: I think that this was a very unfortunate
article. While I am not ready to send children to jail for hurting
someone by playing with guns with hair triggers, the quotes that seemed
to attribute "brilliance" to MafiaBoy and his ilk, and suggested that
such brilliance excused their actions, went beyond the pale. Editor's
(Cowan) Note: I believe that Canadian officials have apprehended a
stupid script kiddy who may need prosecuting. I'm more skeptical that
they have actually apprehended an attacker.

-- 21 April 2000 Navy Intranet Poses Security Risk
The US Navy's plans to build a huge Intranet, connecting all their
operations, has met with criticism from those who say that the plan to
contract the entire project to a single private company poses a security
risk.
http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,35713,00.html Editor's
(Cowan) Note: The article points out that the major criticism of the
plan comes from a government employee union that appears to be primarily
unhappy about the large-scale outsourcing of work. This may be more of
a political issue than a security issue.

-- 21 April 2000 Mitnick Not Allowed on Panel
Convicted cracker Kevin Mitnick was not allowed to be on a panel at an
information technology conference because it would violate the terms of
his probation.

-- 19 April 2000 Domain-Name Hijackings
It's still not clear exactly who was responsible for the recent rash of
domain-name hijackings that appeared to be Balkan propaganda.

-- 18 April 2000 Finding Trojan Horses and Trap Doors a "Research
                  Priority"
The US government says it wants to give priority to finding Trojan
horses and trap doors in computer systems which may be the result of
hurried Y2K fixes.
http://www.computerworld.com/home/print.nsf/all/000418D69A
Editor's (Murray) Note: I was there and that's not the message I got.
This was an example of research that government could fund and that
industry could not. Not a priority.
