Australians Charged Over Spamming Incident
In what is being hailed as one of the first criminal
prosecutions of its kind, two Australian men have been
charged with criminal offenses in both Australia and
the US over the sending of mass commercial e-mail, or
spam, and bulletin board postings to millions of Internet
users. The spamming incident was jointly investigated by
authorities on both sides of the Pacfic Ocean. But don't
expect authorities to clamp down on the senders of every
spam message you receive just yet - the charges mostly
relate to misleading information about securities.

E-mail surveillance center actually government technical
assistance bureau: MI5, the UK's secret security service,
is developing an e-mail surveillance center that when
deployed will be capable of monitoring Internet messages
sent and received in Britain. Claiming the recent growth
of the Net has made it extraordinarily difficult to read
all material transmitted across it, the government has
announced that it intends to require all ISPs to establish
direct links to MI5 through which they will download all
materials that passes through their servers and scour them
for the nefarious e-mails used to run illegal prostitution
rings and drug cartels.

DDoS now new and improved! An sinister new tool being
engineered to script distributed denial of service (DDoS)
attacks may soon yield a utility capable of launching
assaults similar to those used to disable sites in
February, but with "only a handful of agents." "Mstream,"
while still in the early stages of development, has
already been identified as more powerful than its
counterparts "Trinoo", "TFN2K", and "Stacheldraht"
because it requires less resources to be disruptive.
Earlier DDoS attacks -- those that disabled CNN, Amazon
and others -- required the services of hundreds of
computers to effect their disruptions.

Biometrics to bolster Windows security
Microsoft Corp. has agreed to include in future versions
of its Windows operating system a type of software that
uses "biometric" devices such as fingerprint or eye
scanners to boost online security. Microsoft Tuesday
will announce it signed a licensing agreement with
closely held I/O Software Inc. of Riverside, Calif.,
which has a proven "application programming interface,"
or API, for biometrics technology. This essentially is
a program that lets fingerprint or eye scanners
communicate with operating systems.

Attacking the roots of security risks
Daniel Schrader of security software company Trend Micro
tells Arif Mohamed how the habits of hackers and virus
writers are changing, and why defences should be built
into the Internet at large.

The Epidemic of Cyberstalking
Deborah has been stalked in a chat room for over six
months, during which time detailed personal information
and a doctored pornographic photograph with her likeness
has been posted on a website. The cyberstalker has
threatened to rape and kill her. "He told people that I
was on drugs, that I was looking for sex," said Deborah,
not her real name. "He enlisted (his) Internet friends
to harass me."

Cyberstalked? Use Common Sense
With the exception of children, no one may be more
vulnerable on the Net than an excited newbie who posts
a homepage filled with personal information. "They don't
realize that they are giving this ammunition to
cyberstalkers," said Parry Aftab, executive director of
Cyberangels, an Internet safety group. Cyberangels is one
of a handful of groups on the Web providing Internet users
with information to avoid becoming cyberstalked, and what
to do if they already are.

Web startup stirs up privacy concerns
A tiny new Web company, Predictive Networks Inc. of Boston,
is causing concern among privacy advocates -- even before
its startup Monday. The reason: Predictive has developed
software that can track every site a Web surfer visits and
build a "digital silhouette," or a profile of him or her
based on those movements. If someone were to visit an
online sailing site, say, then a travel site and a scuba
site, Predictive's profile model might immediately send
that person sunscreen or snorkel ads in pop-up windows.
The company also plans to target news content based on a
user's profile.

Mitnick reacts to speaking ban
Convicted hacker Kevin Mitnick is back in the news over
the Justice Department's unhappiness with his speaking
on the lecture circuit. Mitnick, recently released from
prison, was told by his probation officer earlier this
month that such appearances violate the terms of his
parole. Under his plea agreement, he is prohibited
from using computers, mobile phones or any other device
to access the Internet for three years. News.com caught
up with Mitnick as he prepared to challenge the decision
to bar him from speaking and writing engagements.
