Feds Debunk E-mail on Deadly Sponges
What now, killer sponges? Not so, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The
agency is calling a new raft of e-mail regarding
virus-infected sponges a hoax.

Cybercops will discuss hack attacks
A computer and high-tech crimes conference in Boston
is expected to draw some of the nation's top cyber
crimefighters to discuss such pressing issues as
denial of service attacks and economic espionage.
Among those expected to talk are U.S. Attorney for
Massachusetts Donald K. Stern, state Attorney General
Tom Reilly, and Scott Charney, a former head of the
Justice Department's computer crimes and intellectual
property division.

Watching while you surf
The UK is leading the world when it comes to high-tech
spying on its citizens, say civil liberty and privacy
groups. The campaigners fear that if a bill that is
getting its second reading in the House of Lords on
Thursday becomes law, the police and security forces
would gain abilities to snoop on British citizens
using the internet that are "unprecedented in peacetime".

ROUTERS FIX COULD HALT NET ATTACKS.
A new fix for routers may avoid or reduce the intensity
of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, such
as those that brought down Yahoo!, CNN.com, and eBay
in February, writes Barry de la Rosa. Stefan Savage,
a networking PhD student at MIT, claims it is possible
to reconfigure routers of Internet service providers
(ISPs) and network service providers so that they add
a 16-bit field to each packet. This would allow a DDoS
victim to trace the attack back to each host machine,
even if the attacker was using false IP addresses to
protect his identity.
