Traceback Messages that will help network managers quickly trace the
origin of denial-of-service attacks on their systems. This 'itrace'
system cannot prevent a denial-of-service attack, but it will help in
isolating and stopping the attacker.

Researchers have discovered a way to include malicious code inside
Microsoft's mail program that could make it possible for an outsider to
control another person's computer. For the code to spread, a victim does
not have to view an attachment, but merely download a message.

By sending fraudulent e-mail messages to i-mode cell phones, which can
receive e-mail and link to Web sites and telephone numbers, Japanese
pranksters are causing unwitting cell phone customers to dial emergency
numbers. The police say these prank calls are hampering its ability to
respond to real emergencies.

A hacker claiming to work for the Assembly's IT office tried to obtain
a politician's password, but the Assembly's security measures rendered

Carnivore is a computer system that, when installed at an ISP, allows
traffic to be scanned for email to an from specific addresses. In an
effort to convince lawmakers and the media that its e-mail tracking
system is necessary for criminal investigations and does not violate
the privacy of individuals, the FBI is demonstrating Carnivore to key
reporters, judges, and members of Congress, and is considering a review
of the system by a third party.

   of Energy Department
The FBI seized a hard drive belonging to Notra Trulock, an ex-official
of the Energy Department, and is investigating whether Trulock used
classified information in a proposed article sent to the CIA's Center
for the Study of Intelligence. While working for the government, Trulock
led an investigation into security breaches at Los Alamos National
Laboratory.

GMX, the largest free e-mail provider in Germany, suffered the third in
a series of recent problems when a hacker changed more than 1,600 users'
passwords. Prior to the incident, GMX had been plagued by a reported
lightning strike that disabled its servers and an accidental deletion
of more than 100,000 e-mails.

Airports in North Carolina and Germany are beginning to scan the irises
of passengers' eyes in an effort to improve security procedures. Since
no two irises are alike, eye-scanning technology can be used to verify
a passenger's identity.

Eight Hollywood studios have taken to court the computer hacking
magazine 2600, attempting to stop the magazine from posting a program
on its Web site that can unscramble encryption codes on DVDs. The
studios worry that distribution of such programs will lead to rampant
video piracy.
