New computer virus variant targets Swiss bank
A new strain of the ``Love Letter'' computer virus
is targeting customers of a Swiss bank, stealing their
account information and sending it off to the virus
writer, U.S. computer security companies said Wednesday.
The virus, known as ``VBS/Loveletter.bd,'' is a variant
of the original Love Letter virus that circulated in
May, and many versions have been created using the
original as a template.

Three indicted in fake virtual art gallery scheme
Three men were indicted Wednesday for their role in
a scheme to fraudulently sell $5.5 million worth of
securities in an allegedly bogus ``online virtual art
gallery and jewelry mall Website'' called Precious
Stones Trading Worldwide. ``Precious Stones was not
engaged in any business except defrauding investors,''
the SEC alleged in the indictment. Russell Rapoport,
26 of Manhattan and brothers Edward Landenbaum, 28,
and Igor Landenbaum, 38, both of Brooklyn, were
charged in Manhattan federal court with conspiring
to commit securities fraud, mail and wire fraud.

Hacker fouls Internet access
The Internet was out of reach for clients of Edmonton
service provider OA Group for most of Monday after an
electronic attack was launched from the Chicago area.
The attacking computer system bogged down the server by
making multiple fake requests to the server site. Both the
Mounties and the FBI are investigating.

Hacker attacks UK government websites
Several UK government websites have been defaced by
a hacker protesting about the dangers of smoking.
The nine separate attacks were carried out by a hacker
calling himself "Herbless", who managed to breach seven
local authority websites in England and Scotland and two
government agencies.

Counterfeit Microsoft products seized in Georgia
Computer software giant Microsoft Corp. and the U.S.
Customs Service said Wednesday almost $1 million
worth of alleged counterfeit Microsoft products had
been seized in Georgia following a six-month
investigation. An spokesman for Redmond, Wash.-based
Microsoft, the world's No. 1 software maker, said at
a news conference the illegal software was discovered
in July after U.S. Customs agents raided the offices
of Compunet Systems of Griffin, Ga. and Tierra Computer
Inc. of Doraville, Ga. It was not immediately clear if
anyone was to be charged in the case.

Internet users hit with charity hoax E-Mails
Internet users are being bombarded with sympathy
e-mails full of tearful tales of youngsters in need
who ask for help. For every address to which the
e-mail is forwarded, there are promises that specific
charities or corporations will donate a few cents to
the needy child. While they appear to rally Internet
users for a good cause, most, if not all, of these
e-mails are fakes, officials say. There is no child
in trouble behind the message.

Court beefs up Carnivore requirements
U.S. government agents have to meet the highest legal
standards if they want to intercept packets of data that
mingle "to" and "from" information with the content of
the message, a U.S. federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.
Even though the ruling did not reverse a Federal
Communications Commission order on packet data, privacy
advocates hailed the ruling, especially as it pertains to
the FBI's Carnivore e-mail sniffer.

FBI to release e-mail documents
The FBI has 3,000 pages of documents about its
``Carnivore'' e-mail surveillance system and expects
to begin releasing some to the public in about 45 days,
the Justice Department said Wednesday. Additional
releases should follow every 45 days until all the
pages have been evaluated for release, the government
said. But it gave no commitment to either process or
release any specific number of pages in each interval.

Animal rights protestors use Net to intimidate shareholders
Animal rights protestors have used information posted
on the Internet to launch a phone and hatemail attack
on the shareholders of a contract research company that
specialises in animal experiments. The personal details
of shareholders of Huntingdon Life Sciences were posted
on an anti-company Web site and were also emailed to more
than 10,000 members of an animal welfare newsgroup, the
Kent Messenger reported. The three men have received
numerous threatening phone calls and letters.

High-Tech Leaders Favor Net Security Czar
A poll of high-tech and e-commerce leaders released
Wednesday shows that a majority believe President
Clinton should appoint a computer security czar to
serve as a "watchdog" on Internet security issues.
The survey of 261 chief information officers and
other business executives, conducted by CIO Magazine
during this week's CIO 100 Symposium Awards Ceremony,
found that 58 percent of all respondents favor the
creation of the U.S. government position.

Do security holes demand full disclosure?
Every once in a while we need to step back and
reassess the effects of the release of detailed
security information and tools on the real world.
And that's what happened recently at DEF CON 8.0,
the annual hacking conference held in Las Vegas.
I had barely stepped off the plane in Vegas when
someone asked if I had heard about Marcus Ranum's
Black Hat Briefings keynote, delivered on the eve
of DEF CON, about full disclosure. In the context
of computer security, full disclosure means publicly
releasing all details of a security vulnerability,
sometimes even including exploit code.

Carnivore and Other Overblown Hype
I've never heard so much misinformed and basically
wrong conversation on a subject. People seem to
think Carnivore can view all network traffic, block
content, or even shut down the Internet.
