A South Korean ministry's Web site was down for nine hours on Saturday,
the result of an apparent denial of service (DoS) attack. The group
suspected of being behind the attack issued a statement declaring DOS
attacks a "legitimate method to express political will."

 -- 25 August 2000 PGP Encryption Flaw
A flaw in PGP encryption could allow a cracker to alter a user's public
key, this gaining illicit access to encrypted communication. As
predicted by the ad hoc study group on key escrow, the flaw was created
when PGP was modified to allow for key escrow, or third-party key
recovery. The company said it planned to post a fix in its web site
and notify customers about the problem. While there have been no
reports of the vulnerability being exploited, such activity may not have
been noticed.

-- 22 August 2000 Antivirus Software for Handheld Synchronization

-- 21 August 2000 Evaluating and Addressing Security
This article asserts that security is a process comprised of audits,
new tools, revised access rights, and changes in data storage. It goes
on to describe a wide variety of security problems and methods for
reducing risk which include outsourcing security, the need for
cooperation and communication between companies regarding security
problems, and methods for protecting systems from internal breaches.

-- 18 August 2000 Indian Web Sites Defaced in Political Protest
As many as sixty Indian web sites have been defaced by Pakistani
crackers who want to spread anti-India propaganda on the Kashmir issue.
The crackers have also attacked some US web sites; it is not clear where
the crackers are based.

-- 18 August 2000 Napster Cracker Threatens Retaliation if Arrested
The person apparently responsible for the rash of pro-Napster
defacements of as many as 60 web sites says that if any arrests are made
in the case, a "huge chain-reaction" of attacks will ensue.

[Editor's (Paller) Note: It's difficult to assess such threats, but one
illuminating case was the young California hacker involved in the Solar
Sunrise attacks. When FBI agents executed a search warrant at his house,
the agents found a paper next to his computer describing how, in an
effort to keep FBI agents away, crackers would plant bombs in strategic
places and threaten to blow them up. The paper was his class project
in English. The assignment, "Describe a daydream you have had."]
