Experts think MS hack was industrial espionage
Security experts think it increasingly likely that
the motive behind the hacker attack on Microsoft was
industrial espionage, the Financial Times said Monday.
Microsoft said last week that hackers had broken into
its computer network and viewed some of the company's
software source code, the secret blueprint for its
programs. Theories on the attack range from malice to
the challenge of cracking the company's security
systems. Security experts told the newspaper that the
sophistication of the operation pointed to industrial
espionage and that the intruder was motivated by profit.

Stealth secrets feared stolen
A Russian mathematician who was given access to an
American supercomputer loaded with stealth warplane
design software is under investigation for espionage.
FEDERAL AGENTS SUSPECT that Aleksey Yeremin, who
logged on to the supercomputer from Moscow, took
advantage of Lockheed Martin and military security
lapses to steal stealth technology secrets. The
3 1/2-year investigation stretches from the heart of
the old Soviet empire to Lockheed=92s secretive Skunk
Works plant in Southern California to a quiet suburb
north of Seattle. Yeremin, vice president of a
software company bsed in Bothell hat did work for
Lockheed, was e-mailed part of Lockheed=92s modeling
program for designing stealth planes. And, sources
say, it would have been easy for him to steal the
rest of it. The potential loss is staggering: the
United States=92 global monopoly on radar invisibility.

Hackers meddle in election contest
Computer hackers have moved Romania's election
battle into cyberspace, linking the former leftist
President Ion Iliescu's official Web site to the
FBI's list of most-wanted fugitives. When computer
users try to reach the poll favorite's site
(www.ioniliescu.com) they get the FBI list of
fugitives instead. ``We don't know who's behind
it,'' Ioan Mircea Pascu, Iliescu's campaign manager
told Reuters on Monday. ``We are investigating
to see who the hackers are,'' a fuming Pascu added.

Security information website hacked
A cracker has broken into a leading computer security
information website that survives hundreds of attempted
hacks every week. AntiOnline, which has the strapline
'Hackers know the weaknesses in your system, shouldn't
you?' and carries security news and information, was
defaced on Saturday by a hacker known as n1nor. The
hacker replaced the front page of the site with a
message boasting about the security flaw he had found.

Israeli hacker fouls Al-Manar site
Hizbullah's Al-Manar Television website was hacked for
12 hours on Sunday by an Israeli, replacing the party's
effective media site with an animated Israeli flag and
photographs of two Israeli soldiers who were lynched
in Ramallah. The Israeli hacker, identifying himself
as Nir M, had a link to pictures of Palestinians
outraged by Israeli attacks against civilians.
Hizbullah webmaster Ali Ayoub said the website was
downed at 9am Sunday.

Hizbullah: Arabs have =91tremendous power to fight=92 on new cyber-front
The Arab-Israeli cyber-war has given many Arabs an
opportunity to express their frustration against the
Jewish state and show they have effective means to
combat attacks, Hizbullah=92s deputy secretary general
says. "Arab people all over the world feel they want
to contribute, each according to his own capacity and
expertise, in the resistance and this (cyberwar)
provided a gateway to that," Sheikh Naim Qassem told
The Daily Star on Sunday. Hizbullah webmaster Ali Ayoub
described the phenomenon that has gained so much momentum
over the past week as a long-awaited discovery by Arabs.
"What happened is that we found out that we have tremendous
power to fight in our own way, that we can actually fight
back in this technological war Israel started," he added.
