Russian spy in FBI: FBI agent Robert Philip Hanssen, a 27-year veteran
of the FBI, has been arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia for the
past 15 years, says Reuters. The story quotes FBI officials as saying
the motivator was money ($1.4 million, according to CNN Headline News
this morning). "Among the secrets Hanssen, a counter-terrorism expert,
allegedly disclosed were methods the United States uses to conduct
electronic surveillance, the FBI said." The same story was also covered
by NBC, AP, and CNN.

'Get ready for war' - over defense strategy: A major analysis in the
Feb. 26 US News & World Report focuses on the brewing struggle over
information technology vs. popular-but-obsolete weapons. The story,
"Tough Choices: Get ready for war -- over which weapons and forces will
prevail as the Bush team tries to shake up the Pentagon," notes that the
struggle quickly moves beyond the halls of the Pentagon to Capitol Hill,
the defense industry, and other vested interests. A sidebar lists
winners and losers, the latter including nuclear weapons.

China's contribution to Iraq: "China is building a fiber-optic
communications system for Iraq's new air-defense network that was
targeted by US and British bombing last week," says the Washington
Times. Late in the story: "US companies also have sold fiber-optic
communications equipment to China, raising questions about whether
US-origin fiber-optic know-how was resold to Iraq as part of the
air-defense network." The story is confirmed in today's Wall Street
Journal.
