Govt. 3G Auction Timetable Threatens U.S. Security - GAO A plan to
auction airwaves for use in next- generation wireless services could
endanger national security if the Defense Department is not given
additional time to study the matter, government auditors said in a
report released today. Under a mandate from Congress to identify
airwaves for use in next generation high-speed "3G" wireless services,
government agencies have proposed have proposed auctioning licenses for
1750-1850 MHz band for private sector use by September 2002.

Researchers develop SSH cracker Researchers at the University of
California at Berkeley have discovered more vulnerabilities in Secure
Shell (SSH) which allow an attacker to learn significant information
about what data is being transferred in SSH sessions, including
passwords. SSH was designed as a secure channel between two machines,
based on strong encryption and authentication. But by observing the
rhythm of keystrokes, and using advanced statistical techniques on
timing information collected, attackers can pick up significant details.

Hack insurer adds Microsoft surcharge Insurance broker J.S. Wurzler
Underwriting Managers has started charging up to 15 percent more in
premiums to clients that use Microsoft's Internet Information Server
software, which the Code Red worm feasted on. In light of the $2
billion in damage caused by Code Red, founder and CEO John Wurzler's
decision just before the virus hit seems prescient. Wurzler gained
notoriety earlier this year for hiking cyberinsurance rates on companies
that use Microsoft NT software on their servers.

Copyright law chills IT security research Critics say digital copyright
protection censors legitimate IT, scientific research. A cloud of fear
and uncertainty hung over the 10th annual Usenix Security Symposium here
last week, as IT researchers wondered nervously whether they would be
hauled off to jail by the FBI for revealing security flaws in an
antipiracy technology backed by the music industry.
