Protocol used for 802.11b standard is not strong enough for information
at 'official use only' security status, expert says
By William Jackson, Government Computing News, 8/22/2001
http://www.gcn.com/20_24/security/16838-1.html

Wireless networks are fast to set up and flexible enough to let workers
roam through an office or campus. But "you would not want to trust
anything sensitive to today's 802.11b" wireless LAN standard, said Maj.
David A. Nash, an electrical engineering and computer sciences
instructor for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The Army has a
moratorium on wireless LAN use, said Lt. Col. Daniel Ragsdale,
director of the department's information technology and operations
center.

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Rules Individuals Have No Expectation of
Privacy in Phone Calls Made to Their Homes

<http://www.law.com/professionals/techlaw.html/#news>

The Legal Intelligencer

In a decision that would make George Orwell glow with prescient
delight, a fractured Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that, given the
methods of telephone communication widely used today, including
speakerphones and cordless phones, individuals have no reasonable
expectation of privacy in telephone calls made to their own homes.
The phone calls at issue were taped as part of a drug investigation
conducted by law enforcement.

...
The decision has to do with drug officers using a cooperating individual
who consented to having his conversations taped with the suspect.

"Considering the methods of telephone communication widely used today --
including speakerphones and cordless phones -- a person has no idea who
is listening in on the other line and therefore has no reason to believe
the information discussed in the conversation will not be revealed, the
majority said. "

"Justice Ronald Castille issued a concurring opinion, joined by Justice
Thomas Saylor, to relate his belief that there is nothing in the state
constitution that ever requires the commonwealth to obtain a probable
cause determination before one of its agents can make a "simple phone
call" to a person's house and have it taped by police. "
