Cypherpunk Sentenced to 10 Years The judge didn't just throw the book at
Jim Bell, he threw it twice and made him pay for extra damages. Bell,
the Libertarian essayist and contributor to the Cypherpunk mailing list,
was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for stalking Jeff Gordon, a
federal agent who had been investigating his activities. He was given
two consecutive sentences of five years each, meaning that he will not
begin to serve the second sentence until the first one is over. Most
often people convicted of multiple charges in a single trial serve their
sentences concurrently, so that both begin and end at the same time.

Internal net saboteurs being brought to justice An IS worker is
scheduled to face federal criminal charges this week in U.S. District
Court in Miami for allegedly downloading a virus into his employer's
computer system, crashing the network for nearly two full days. This
case, which comes a little more than a year after the first federal
criminal prosecution of computer sabotage, is just one in a growing
number of insider-based network attacks, according to federal law
enforcement agents. Another case is getting ready to go to trial in
October in Las Vegas, and yet another was wrapped up with a guilty
verdict this summer in New Hampshire.

Taleban website defaced A hacker has broken into a pro-Taleban website,
just hours after the Taleban banned the use of the internet in
Afghanistan. The hacker defaced the site with obscenities against the
Taleban and their ally, the Saudi militant Osama bin Laden, and Chechen
leaders. The hacker publicised the fact that, while the Taleban have
banned their citizens from accessing the internet, they and their
supporters have been using it for external publicity for years.

DOD seeks security ally The Defense Intelligence Agency is seeking
assistance in tracking computer network attacks on Defense Department
systems that originate from an unspecified foreign country. DIA, a
combat support agency that produces and manages foreign military
intelligence, announced Aug. 23 that it intends to award a sole source
contract to Veridian.
