In no mood to leave any stone unturned during the possible attack to nab bin Laden, wanted 'dead or alive' by the US, troops likely to particiapte in the attack are being armed with latest weapons systems and technology, including GBU-28. Quoting intelligence sources, The New York Post newspaper reported that Laden's loyal fighters numbering between 3,000 and 5,000 have left their camps and may now be dispersed in an extensive network of mountain caves and tunnels, known as "karez," throughout rugged southern Afghanistan. Pentagon is rushing to complete development of new cave busting "earth penetrator" bombs to locate the fugitive and routing him from the hideouts, the Post said. GBU-28 weighs 2000-pound, is long and thin and the latest modified version of so called "bunker busters" used in Persian Gulf War, the paper said. After being dropped from B-2 Stealth bombers, the bomb is guided to the target by laser infrared technology and relying on momentum, it is designed to penetrate up to 22 feet through the earth before exploding incinerating everything inside the tunnel. ------------------------ Yahoo!
