E-Mail prompts hijack scare on Japanese flight
TOKYO, Sept 26, (Reuters) *****
- Police and Japan Airlines officials had a scare on Wednesday after a
woman who received an e-mail from a friend aboard a flight to Seoul
mistakenly reported the plane may have been hijacked.
"The police told us of the report and we quickly made radio contact with
the crew who were able to confirm that nothing was amiss," said Yoshie
Otaka, a spokeswoman for Japan's largest carrier.
Kyodo news agency said a man on the flight had sent a joke e-mail with
references to "Arab-looking men" from his cell phone to a friend in
Japan.
A police spokesman said the word "hijack" had not been used in the
e-mail but, with tight security at airports after the September 11
attacks in the United States, the incident had given them "a nervous
moment or two."
The flight from Kansai International Airport in western Japan carrying
214 passengers landed safely in Seoul, capital of South Korea, shortly
after noon.
Kyodo said the man was refused entry into Korea after being questioned
by the police and will be returning to Japan.
