Security Council is expected to vote in favor of a resolution to lift sanctions on Sudan, after the United States indicated it will drop its opposition to the move. The mainly diplomatic sanctions were imposed on Khartoum five years ago in an effort to force the government to extradite suspects accused of trying to assassinate Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 1995. The United States lists Sudan as one of seven countries that sponsor terrorism. But Washington apparently has softened its stance on the Sudanese government following its sympathetic reaction to this month's terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Earlier this week, U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Sudan's statements since the September 11 attacks have been positive and supportive. On September 6, President Bush announced a U.S. peace initiative aimed at ending Sudan's 18-year civil war between the Muslim-dominated government and southern-based Christian and animist militias fighting for autonomy. ------------------------ Yahoo!
