Syria's position was expressed by Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara Thursday night after talks between President Bashar al-Assad and the European Union (EU) delegation which is seeking to gather Muslim support for the coalition. "President Assad confirmed his support to the international efforts aimed at fighting against terrorism," to the three-man delegation led by Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel, Shara said. But the Syrian foreign minister said Assad had stressed four main points: "First: the targets of this campaign should be very clear and terrorism needs to be defined. "Second: we cannot accept a military operation causing civilian deaths. "Third: the United Nations framework is important for two things: to combat terrorism and to define terrorism. "Fourth: there shouldn't be any relation between terrorism and the Arabic and Islamic world." The Syrian minister avoided the issue of what concrete form his country's support in the fight against terrorism could take. He vigorously protested against the fact that Syria is still on the US State Department's blacklist of countries supporting terrorism, attributing this measure to "Israeli pressure" on the US administration. He indirectly called on Washington to step up its involvement for a settlement to the Israeli-Arab conflict and put an end to the "aggressions" of the Jewish state. Shara emphasised concern in Damascus that Arab resistance against Israeli occupation should not be equated with terrorism, but did compare Israeli repression of the Palestinians to terrorism. "If one confuses the right of peoples to fight against occupation with those who kill innocents, then we will confuse the victims of terrorism with the terrorists," he said. Syria's stance caused some hesitation in the EU delegation. "I don't think it would be useful to answer this," Michel said at a news conference in reply to a question on Syria's demand that Arab resistance to Israel not to be equated with terrorism. "There are many convergent points, but we cannot agree on everything," he said. The Belgian minister pointed out that Syria was the only one of the five Muslim countries his delegation has visited which opposes the United States' right to retaliate unilaterally. Michel, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, has already visited Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt with the troika to drum up support for the US-led coalition against terrorism. Besides Michel, the delegation is made up of EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten. ------------------------ Yahoo!
