The protests planned for this weekend originally were to have opposed policies of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The global financial organizations called off their annual meetings for this year after the Sept. 11 attacks, and most protesters canceled their events. A few groups shifted their focus, however, to oppose what they call a rush to war by the United States that could kill many innocent people. The protesters also condemn the backlash against Arabs and Muslims and say that the Bush administration has used the attacks as an excuse to curtail civil liberties. With the surge of emotion after the attacks, local police have worried they might have to protect protesters from angry bystanders or counterdemonstrators. Local activist Adam Eidinger said he supports tracking down the terrorists and putting them on trial but opposes war. "When we commit violence against any people, even terrorists or a country hosting terrorists, it fuels more violence to come back and get us," he said. The Anti-Capitalist Convergence, an anarchist group based in the capital, planned an anti-war march on Saturday to begin near Capitol Hill and end at the IMF and World Bank headquarters in downtown Washington. Police have blamed anarchists for much of the violence at anti-globalization protests during the past few years. The Convergence group said in a statement it was toning down its sometimes militant tactics for this march against U.S. foreign and military policies. Organizers said they expected several thousand demonstrators. "A rally like that at this time is just inappropriate," said Jim Parmelee, president of NorthernVirginiaGOP.com, a group of Republican activists coming out to oppose the message of the protesters. "If I were a family member of one of the folks missing, and I saw this - it's just horrible." An anti-war coalition led by the New York-based International Action Center had plans for an even larger event that could draw more than 5,000 people, said organizer Richard Becker. He said many groups representing American Muslims and Arabs planned to attend the rally and participate in a march that begins several blocks from the White House. The Washington Peace Center and other groups have planned another march for Sunday. Before the terror attacks, police said they expected as many as 100,000 anti-globalization protesters and wanted help from other jurisdictions, including New York City. District of Columbia Police Chief Charles Ramsey has said his force, augmented by federal officers, should be able to handle the scaled-back demonstrations. --- On the Net: International Action Center: http://www.iacenter.org Anti-Capitalist Convergence: http://www.abolishthebank.org/en/new-call.html Washington Peace Center: http://www.washingtonpeacecenter.org Counter-Demonstrators: http://www.northernvirginiagop.com/ District of Columbia police: http://mpdc.dc.gov AP-ES-09-29-01 0122EDT ------------------------ Yahoo!
