Protesters March Against Possible U.S. Attack

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the
streets of downtown Washington on Saturday protesting potential U.S.
military action in retaliation for the attacks at the World Trade Center
and Pentagon.

Flanked by dozens of police in riot gear and followed by city buses for
potential arrests, the protesters carried signs saying ``No War'' to
urge the Bush administration to avoid military conflict.

``We are marching for an alternative to the war that Bush is
proposing,'' said Piper Joseph, 26, an environmental consultant.

Some protesters carried Palestinian flags while others had red and black
flags representing anarchy. Some had gas masks and construction helmets
for protection. A police helicopter circled overhead.

Despite the protests, opinion polls show widespread support for
President Bush.

A new Washington Post poll of 1,215 Americans showed that nine out of 10
people believe he was doing a good job. A similar number said they
favored a military response to the attacks and said that the United
States needed to capture Osama bin Laden, the U.S.' prime suspect in the
attacks.

Many anti-globalization activists protesting on Saturday had originally
planned to demonstrate against the Bush administration and the annual
meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

But lenders postponed their meetings after the attacks that flattened
the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon, so protesters said they
would target Bush's war on terrorism and advocate peace instead.

The demonstrations were peaceful compared to previous protests against
IMF and World Bank meetings, although police did use pepper spray on at
least one occasion.

Unfortunately, Assistant Police Chief Terrance Gainer was hit with the
spray and was taken to a hospital to have his eyes flushed out.

``He was indeed pepper-sprayed, we probably pepper-sprayed him
ourselves,'' Assistant Police Chief Michael Fitzgerald told Reuters.
Gainer soon returned to the scene.
