The rallies were marked by calls of support for Osama Bin Laden, the chief suspect behind the Sept. 11 suicide attacks, and a decision to refrain from burning US flags. Khaled Aref, Fatah s senior official in Sidon, told The Daily Star that the reason for not burning the US flag was because we are celebrating the intifada. But refugees burned effigies and pledged to continue the fight against Israel. About 5,000 demonstrators, some carrying rifles, took part in one of three Ain al-Hilweh demonstrations. It was staged at 7am in support of the intifada. Demonstrators burned a miniature model of an Israeli tank, along with effigies of Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon and the Israeli flag. Demonstrators consisted of supporters of both the Fatah organization and the Esbat al-Ansar. This was the first time the two groups marched together. We want our land to burn the feet of the Israelis, the protesters shouted. Esbat al-Ansar was listed Tuesday by President George W. Bush among 27 groups and individuals whose assets were frozen on suspicion of supporting terrorism. Another demonstration, featured supporters from Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Esbat al-Ansar. Demonstrators carried billboards supporting the intifada and the Muslims of Afghanistan against any potential US attack. Some Esbat al-Ansar supporters shouted slogans urging bin Laden to explode a revolution against the Americans. In Beirut, refugees mourned the nearly 600 Palestinians who have been killed in the uprising, and said it offered their sole hope for regaining their land and escaping the squalor of the camps.
