The Israelis said they are prepared to back up their cases against the organizations - Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah - with intelligence information. Sharon made a personal plea on the issue to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell by phone last Friday - and solidified the appeal formally with a special vote by his defense Cabinet yesterday morning. The Israelis charge that Islamic Jihad and Hamas have been carrying out suicide-bomber attacks in the Jewish state, particularly in the past year. Last year, 50 people, mostly civilians, died in the attacks, and several hundred more were wounded. The Israelis allege that Palestinian Authority chief Yasser Arafat has been in close contact with the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, both of which are headquartered in the Gaza Strip. Sharon's administration says Hezbollah - a Shiite terrorist organization in Lebanon backed by Syria and supported by Iran - has been helping the Palestinians in "martyr" attacks in Gaza, establishing the channel through Arafat's "residential guards," which include the so-called Force 17. The Israeli Cabinet's decision comes as the Bush administration has vowed to take major steps to dismantle terrorist organizations and their sponsoring partners. The three organizations identified by the Israelis have already been considered possible targets by the United States, sources have said. Meanwhile, in related Mideast developments yesterday, the Israeli government said it was extending its cease-fire deadline with the Palestinians another 48 hours, until tomorrow night. That announcement came as Israeli troops shot dead three Palestinians in the West Bank - bringing the Palestinian death toll to 18 since the cease-fire was declared last week. No Israelis have been reported killed during that time. In Syria, radical Palestinian groups blasted the cease-fire as a "waste of time" - and said their own year-old uprising against Israeli foes will intensify. "The uprising will continue and get stronger, despite U.S. attempts to bring calm to the Middle East region and to put the Palestinian cause on the ice," said Ahmed Jibril, secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command. ------------------------ Yahoo!
