Wafiq Aql, the spiritual guide of Esbat al-Ansar, rejected US accusations that the group was linked to global terrorism. Aql, known by the code-name of Abu Sharif, claimed in an interview with LBCI in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh, that the group’s leader, Abdel-Karim Saadi, “is nowhere in the camp. He is not on Lebanese soil.” Saadi, who goes by the name of Abu Mohjen, and other members of the group have been convicted by Lebanese courts of assassinations and bombings in the mid to late 1990s. However, Abu Sharif denied the accusations. “Esbat al-Ansar has no organizational links to Sheikh Osama bin Laden,” he said, “may the almighty God protect him from all evil.” Asked whether he predicted a backlash in the event of a US attack on Afghanistan to rout bin Laden and his followers, Abu Sharif defiantly said: “It is the duty of every Muslim to take up arms and take to the streets if an Islamic state came under attack. And Esbat al-Ansar will certainly fulfill its religious obligation.” ------------------------ Yahoo!
