UPDATE 1-Sydney bomb hoax evacuates American Express tower

(Updates with police confirming bomb threat a hoax)

SYDNEY, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Thousands of workers were evacuated from the
American Express building in downtown Sydney on Wednesday after a hoax
bomb threat, police said.

"There was an announcement over the P.A. (public address system). They
just asked us to leave the building," office worker John Smith told
local radio from a park opposite the building.

"They said 'excuse me people there has been a bomb threat in the
building, could you all please leave'," he said.

Police said a hoax bomb threat was received "electronically" by workers
in the 28-floor tower and around 2,500 people were evacuated shortly
after 9.00 a.m., but a search of the building found nothing.

"We are regarding this as a hoax. Each of the floors has been searched
and nothing was found," police officer Frank Helsen told Reuters at the
scene.

One worker who asked not to be named told Reuters he and other
colleagues received the hoax bomb threat via their voice e-mails when
they arrived at work. The e-mail was time stamped 1.20 a.m. (1520 GMT)
and simply said there was a bomb in the building.

Police said the hoax was directed at the building and not any tenant.
The tower's two main tenants are the U.S. credit card firm and
Australia's largest telco, Telstra.

Workers mingling in Hyde Park were nervous, but were allowed back into
the building after about one hour and 45 minutes.

Australian authorities heightened security around U.S. buildings after
the September 11 hijack attacks on New York and Washington and again
following the U.S.-led airstrikes on Afghanistan this week.
