Prior to the current debate over airing bin Laden's missives (for fear they
may be carrying hidden instructions,) what would mainstream American media
have done if they had been receiving these materials directly? Air them, I
imagine.

While mainstream muslim/arab peoples denounce the WTC attack, they have not
been as quick to accept that this was a bin Laden operation, due to their
more local view of world events. So airing bin Laden materials, even
regularly, is not seen as a fundamentally wrong thing to do, especially in
that (I understand) they air many viewpoints in conflicted debates. That
is a healthy thing. It is not the job of al Jazeeri to be the Voice Of
America.

And while it is nonesense (in my view) to think that bin Laden has been
motivated to act because of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, the pools of
discontent that have given rise to his ilk, and only begrudging
denunciations of his act, have not formed in a complete vacuum. I listen
to some US leaders speak of astonishment that others dislike us so. Do
they believe that such evil forces like al Queda erupt in the world due to
sunspots?

I support the President's "you are with us or against us" stance on
terrorism, but we will eventually be forced to deal with fuzzier issues to
"drain the swamps". In that latter fight, stark polarizations will often
be counterproductive.

If this is really a fight of "good against evil", we must recognize that
both exist in every human heart, and thus in even the best of foreign policies.
