U.S. Confirms No-Fly Zone Strike on Southern Iraq
Reuters

WASHINGTON (Oct. 14) - U.S. warplanes bombed a command and control
system in southern Iraq in connection with its patrols over the no-fly
zone, the U.S. military's Central Command said on Sunday.

It said the strikes at 8:30 a.m. EDT (1230 GMT) were "in response to
hostile Iraqi threats against coalition pilots and aircrews conducting
routine monitoring of the southern no-fly zone."

Central Command emphasized in its statement that the strikes on Iraq
were not connected to the U.S. war on terrorism that has led to a week
of bombardment of Afghanistan.

"Today's coalition strikes in the no-fly zones were executed as
self-defense measures in response to Iraqi hostile threats and acts
against coalition aircrews and their aircraft and are not related to the
president's campaign against terrorism," the statement said.

The last strike in the southern no-fly zone was on Oct. 3.

An Iraqi military spokesman in a statement carried by the Iraqi News
Agency, said U.S. and British warplanes carried out 11 sorties over
southern Iraq.

U.S. and British jets have patrolled no-fly zones over southern and
northern Iraq set up after the expulsion of Iraqi troops from Kuwait in
1991 to protect Shiite Muslim and Kurdish minorities.
