This is where the region gets a LOT more dangerous.] Hizbullah goes on offensive in Shebaa Farms Israeli warplanes bomb suspected resistance positions Cilina Nasser and Samer Wehbe Daily Star staff Oct. 23, 01 Tension in the South took a dramatic turn for the worse Monday, with Hizbullah guerrillas mounting a wide-scale attack on Israeli forces occupying the Shebaa Farms and their leader pledging that the international campaign against terrorism would not derail the course of resistance. “Today’s resistance operation is not a new thing since our land is still occupied. Just as we never feared the noise of the fleets in the world, we will not be scared now. We have to be more alert and prepared than we were before Sept. 11,” Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hizbullah’s secretary-general, vowed. Hizbullah fighters fired rockets and mortar shells just after noon on Israeli outposts in Rowsat Allam and Jabal Summaq which both overlook the Shebaa Farms. The same posts were targeted during Hizbullah’s Oct. 3 attack. In a statement issued shortly after the attacks, Hizbullah confirmed the operation, saying that after monitoring the movements of Israeli soldiers in the outposts, the artillery unit of the Islamic Resistance directed mortar fire on both outposts “scoring direct hits.” Witnesses said that smoke rose from both Israeli posts. In retaliation, Israeli fighters swooped over the border village of Kfar Shuba firing missiles on its outskirts. Windows of several houses, including the village’s public school, were shattered. Israeli fighters also fired at least eight missiles on the hill of Saddana, just north of Kfar Shuba. No casualties were reported. Israeli artillery fired a barrage on a four-kilometer road that links Kfar Shuba to Shebaa. At least four missiles targeted the road which borders Birket Naqqar, the area where three Israeli soldiers were captured by Hizbullah in October 2000. Some 30 heavy artillery shells set fields afire near the Lebanese village of Halta. Speaking just two hours after the attack during an Islamic Resistance Wounded Day ceremony in Haret Hreik, Nasrallah ridiculed suggestions received recently by the party through various “European and non-European” channels that if the party were to abandon its resistance operations and function solely as a political party, it would be removed from US terrorism lists. After paraphrasing the suggestions, Nasrallah said the party totally rejected, “their criteria and standards,” saying that “those who ask us to do this are asking us to give up our essence and be something else.” Nasrallah added: “Let everyone be assured … that Hizbullah’s convictions, ideology, jihad, course of action, resistance and objectives will not change. “When our brothers’ names are mentioned on the terrorist lists, we are neither frightened nor worried,” he said, without explaining his reservations on the lists posted by the United States in the wake of last month’s attacks. Even though the US State Department has long regarded Hizbullah as a terrorist organization, recent lists demanding actions against individuals and groups linked to worldwide clandestine acts have not included the party. “We condemn the listing of some of these names as terrorists, not because we are worried but because those who prepared terrorist lists do not have the right to do so since they are the No. 1 and greatest terrorists in the world” he said. The Israeli raid is the first on Lebanon since July, when Israeli fighters destroyed a Syrian Army radar base in the Bekaa in response to a Hizbullah attack on Israeli armored patrols in the Shebaa Farms area. Hizbullah in turn responded by launching a heavy bombardment against every Israeli outpost in the Shebaa Farms, including the listening post known as “radar” with its high-tech equipment. ------------------------ Yahoo!
