The Situation in Caspian Region "Close to Ecocatastrophe"

CIS, October 31, 2001 [ 00:20 ]
, CNA <http://www.caspian.ru/cgi/eng/lenta.cgi#2841

MOSCOW. The ecological situation in the Caspian region is "close to the
ecocatastrophe," the deputy of Russian Foreign Minister, the Russian
presidential special representative for determination of status of the
Caspian Sea Victor Kaluzhny said, while speaking at the Transboundary
cooperation and stable development in the Caspian region International Forum
in Derbent (Dagestan), October 25-27.

Paying attention to fish resources in the Caspian Sea, Kaluzhny stressed
that they are in need of special legislative and practical protection by all
littoral states. To bar from worsening ecological situation in the Caspian
Sea, the regional states should "consolidate their efforts," he said. So,
the special representative expressed regret by the fact that such states of
the Caspian region as Iran, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan participate in the
forum as observers, and Turkmen representatives "are absent at all."
