"The Egyptian Gazette" EDITORIALS With America's ariel campaign against Afghanistan well into its third week, conditions in the beleaguered country are going from worse to worst. Whereas the military and political objectives for the achievement of which the US has launched this campaign are a long way from being realized, the bombing by American forces of civilian targets casts doubt on America's real intentions. Tensions in Pakistan are also rising so that the future of stability in this part of the world is now rendered at risk. The US, as leader of the current world order, needs to reassess the situation at hand with the aim of preventing further deteriorations. It is imperative that the world avoid the dark tunnel of violence and counter-violence "Al Ahram" It is essential for us all to recognize that our true enemy is not a religion but is terrorism; it is indeed essential that we differentiate between Islam, a religion which advocates spiritual values and the extremist groups who spread hatred. Bin laden's message should be seen for what it really is as counter-Islamic. Harrassments of Arabs and Muslims in the West must therefore come to an end and foreigners should be introduced to the tolerant teachings of Islam. "Al Akhbar" There is no debating the fact that the Palestinian people's resistance to regain their occupied land is not an act of terrorism. Should it be deemed so, however, it must be noted that the root cause lies in the massacres committed by the Israeli occupation forces who seek to terrorize and intimidate the Palestinians. Egypt supports the idea of convening an international conference on terrorism. Measures will, then, be adopted to promote international peace and stability. "Al Ahram Al Messa'i" When it conducted lengthy aerial campaigns against Baghdad and Belgrade in 1991 and 1999, the US did not try to capture Saddam Hussein or Slobodan Milosevic. Its key aim was to cripple the enemy's military capabilities and humiliate the ruling regimes. This objective is again high on the US agenda with its military campaign in Afghanistan now in its fourth week. But, unlike the situation in the Gulf or the Balkans, the US will not shout victory without bagging its Public Enemy Number One: Osama bin i eden. President George W. Bush has vowed to catch him dead or alive. The US has singled out bin i eden as the prime suspect in last month's terror attacks on New York and Washington. With all the massive and sophisticated firepower involved, the Afghanistan mission is a daunting one— to put it mildly. For almost a month now, the US and its allies have hammered Afghanistan. Terrible mishits have been reported. On Friday, US warplanes pounded the warehouses of the International Red Cross Committee (IRCC) In northern Kabul for the second time In 10 days. These appalling blunders are feeding Taliban's propaganda machine. The movement, which controls most of Afghanistan, is taking advantage of the situation to whip up Muslim sentiment against the US by accusing it of targeting civilians. And the longer the war drags on, the bigger the room for similar mistakes which will inevitably whittle down the US-led alliance. So, the US Is desperate to get its hands on bin Laden. However, he remains elusive. Four weeks of sustained bombardment have failed to flush bin Laden and his lieutenants out of their caves. The Americans must come down to earth (literally) If they want to trap bin Laden. A ground war, however, is not without its risks. Many military gurus and strategists agree that the real war in Afghanistan has not yet begun. Known for its Inhospitable - terrain and intractable landscape, Afghanistan, as the Soviets learnt more than a decade ago the hard way, is presenting the Americans with an adventure whose consequences no-one can guess. A push deep into unknown territory could cost the Americans dear. At the same time, it will not necessarily mean the capture of bin Laden. Basking in the unqualified support of Taliban and a huge following in some neighboring countries, the wanted Saudi-bom dissident could flee to a safe haven. (Rumor has it that bin Laden left Afghanistan straight after the US pointed the accusing finger at him for the 11 September attacks). America's dilemma in Afghanistan Is that If it doesn't catch bin Laden, its vengeful and sweeping campaign will have lost a lot of momentum in the very first phase. "The Egyptian Gazette" ARTICLES AND COMMENTARIES Unless America's verbal denunciations of of the Israeli aggressions on the Palestinian people; indeed unless its verbal support of a Palestinian state turns into conrete action, the American foreign policy machine will remain inconsistent, with its Middle East stance obstructing its campaign against terrorism. Now, more than ever before, the American president possesses the means to offset pressure exerted by Israel and by its supporters in Congress. President Bush can, if he so wishes, do this. Others have done it and were able to have Israel reined in check. Eisenhaur's ultimatum to Ben Geurion which forced the 1957 Israeli withdrawal from Sinai is a case in a point. Another is Gerald Ford's announcement in 1975 that Washington would reconsider its Middle East policies if Israel insists on promotoing its own interests while completely disregarding America's. President Bush Senior also did it in 1992 when he threatened to hold off a 10 billion dollar loan to Tel Aviv, should it proceed with the construction of settlements then obstructing the peace process. It is hoped that current Administration has learned the lesson that to leave the Middle East prey to frustration, would lead to By: Atef Al Ghamri "Al Ahram" I suggest that we Arabs boycott Israeli PM Sharon. Just as Israelis are free to have him as premier, the Palestinians are also free to choose who to speak with, or object to. Sharon insists on regarding the Palestinians as Israeli subjects to dictate his terms to, according to his own views and not to the provisions on resolutions adopted by the United Nations, Resolution 242 of 1967 in particular, which remains yet to be implemented. By: Mahmoud A. Mourad "Al Akhbar" It is almost a month now since the beginning of military operations in Afghanistan, a month of bombing and missile-shooting, of scenes beamed on television screens showing deep holes in barren lands, and clay houses destroyed by American missiles. Children born hungry have also been shown with faces disfigured and limbs maimed by the so-called smart bombs. A month gone by and still bin Laden hides in his unkown cave somewhere in the mountains of Afghanistan? Is this really a war? And are those innocent young children, and those millions of refugees who fled their homes fearing death by American fighter planes the culprits responsible for mounting the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September? What about America's super hi-tech weapons; are they too a fig of the imagination? By: Mhmoud Salah "Akher Saa magazine" Until 11 September, the whole world thought that the US had the wherewithal to pick a needle out of a haystack. After what had occurred, friends and enemies of the States alike became bewildered and confused. Some 60 days later, the Americana themselves now admit that the mountainous caves of Afghanistan are a very safe refuge for Osama bin Laden and the members of his Al-Qaeda organization. So where are the Americans now? We all thought they were superhuman, equipped with invincible power, wealth and the ability to manipulate. Needless to any, all these elements are still there. That is why the Americana are still boasting that their military campaign against bin Laden is going to continue according to plan. The Americans have dismissed the threats issued by Taliban leader Mullah Omar and his associates as so much hot air. But it's worth bearing in mind that, although the US has dropped more than 3,000 bombs on Afghanistan (according to US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld), it has only managed to kill 16 members of Taliban. It is obvious that innocent civilians in Afghanistan, who complain that they have not tasted beef for three years, are suffering moat of the casualties when it comes to the non-atop US bombings. As for Rumsfeld, he is telling 0a fellow citizens, who are getting restive, to be patient and calm. He says that the bombing is only the first phase of the war. But what is going to come next in a US war that is causing so much destruction and death in Afghanistan? There are now growing fears that Afghanistan will be wiped out, with Taliban and bin Laden defiantly threatening the States with dire consequences. Recently, US Secretary of Justice John Ashcroft warned of a possible terrorist attack next year against America. He said that more than 18,000 US servicemen and policemen are now on full alert. Worse, President George W. Bush told the first meeting of the newly-formed Home Security Office that it was very upsetting to see American hospitality and magnanimity being abused. However, it is apparent that the American hospitality and magnanimity mean different things to different nations. On the one hand Arab and Muslim nations condemn the double-standards policy of the US, on the other Israel enthusiastically supports the US veto! Now Pakistan has compounded the US headache in Central Asia. Pakistan's mosques have launched fund-raising campaigns to help their poor neighbors in Afghanistan, while thousands of anti-American demonstrators regularly take to the streets in Pakistani cities. Washington is even afraid that the Pakistani government will collapse at any moment. The New Yorker magazine recently claimed that the US administration has formed a joint elite force including Israeli commandos that will seize nuclear weapons in Pakistan if necessary. But is it an easy task? We recall the tragedy of Afghan warlord Haj Abdul Haq who was hanged by Taliban when US planes failed to rescue him. Eyewitnesses said that Abdul-Haq's corpse wee thrown to the beasts Is that what Islam preaches? Is there any difference between America's bombing of innocent civilians in their homes and the callousness of Taliban's mullahs? By: Samir Ragab "The Egyptian Gazette" NEWS IN BRIEF nHuge gold finds in the Eastern Desert could put Egypt among the world's top five gold producers, a state official said. Minister of Industry Moustafa el-Refai said exploration in the El-Sokkari district had confirmed 1.66 million ounces of gold, bringing Egypt's total confirmed reserves to 16 million ounces, valued at $4.3 billion. These discoveries were made in 500 square kilometers of a 3,000 square kilometer concession to be explored as part of a large venture," he said. The government licensed an Australian firm to explore the concession, and the company spent $17 million over the past nine years on exploratory drilling and research. "Under the agreement, Egypt will shoulder no costs of the excavation process, but will receive three per cent of all revenues. It will also receive 40 per cent of net profits during the first two years of operations, which will rise to 45 per cent in the following two years and 50 per cent after four years," Refai said. The majority of the gold recovered from the concession will be exported when production begins in six months, a company spokesman said ------------------ http://all.net/ Your use of Yahoo!
