Computer virus hits hospitals

Ananova, 11/2/2001
<a href="http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_439008.html?menu">http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_439008.html?menu>=

Computer systems in hospitals across Northern Ireland have been hit by a
virus.

A "large number" of the 19 health trusts in the province have been
affected by the virus.

It has disrupted systems and networks, including at the major Royal
Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The virus causes problems by generating spurious network traffic.

The affected trusts were isolated from the health and social services
network, while steps were taken to remove the virus.

The number of systems affected was reduced as they were swept to remove
the virus.

Contingency plans have been in place in the trusts to ensure disruption
is kept to a minimum.

An investigation has been launched to see how the computer virus got
into the system and where it came from.
