US government server blacklisted
By James Middleton, VNU Net, 11/14/2001 http://www.vnunet.com/News/1126790

The US government's aviation safety authority was forced to batten down
the hatches on one of its mail servers after it emerged that the machine
could be used to relay spoofed messages. According to mail relay
blacklists such as the Mail Abuse Protection Systems (MAPS), an email
server run by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had been open to
abuse for some time. It seems a junk mailer used the vulnerable server
to send out spam, prompting MAPS to add the machine to its blacklist of
mail relay servers. But despite being open to abuse by spammers, the
server could also have been used to forge authentic-looking emails from
the FAA itself, as a fake email would still have legitimate headers
showing the FAA.gov server as its origin - a worrying thought after the
recent terrorist attacks. But the FAA seems to have now blocked access
to the mail port on the server, thus solving the problem.
