HP: Saboteur's firing boosted Superdome Firing an employee accused of
sabotaging tests of Hewlett-Packard's top-end Superdome Unix server
helped the company improve a key performance measurement, an executive
said Monday. HP also announced a price cut of about 30 percent for the
top-end system, its flagship product in the effort to derail Sun
Microsystems' dominance and IBM's increasing momentum in the Unix server
market.

Rep. Baird Introduces Computer Security Legislation Rep. Brian Baird,
D-Wash., Friday introduced legislation to start a research and
development program at the National Institute of Standards and
Technology to improve computer and network security. The bill, H.R.
3361 - the Computer Security Enhancement and Research Act of 2001 -
would support research at higher education institutions for developing
better security for networked information systems.

White House casting cyber nets The White House is moving forward with
several information technology initiatives to try to create a more
secure government and nation =97 including a cyberwarning network =97
even before the board set up to lead such work has its first meeting.
President Bush established the Critical Infrastructure Protection Board
through an executive order last month to serve as a central point for
ideas and initiatives for cybersecurity in government and reaching out
to the private sector.

U.S. Looks to System Separate From Internet Bush administration is
considering the creation of a secure new government communications
network separate from the Internet that would be less vulnerable to
attack and efforts to disrupt critical federal activities. The idea for
such a system, called GovNet, is the brainchild of Richard A. Clarke, a
counterterrorism expert whom President Bush recently named his special
adviser for cyberspace security. (NY Times article, free registration

Vigilance Also Needed in 'Cyber Domain,' Says DoD Official. The World
War II-era adage "Loose Lips Sink Ships" underlined the peril of
uttering privileged defense information in public -- possibly within
earshot of enemy spies. The United States today is engaged in a war
against global terrorism and the need to safeguard classified -- and
even unclassified -- information is especially acute over the World Wide
Web, the Defense Department's senior information security official noted
Nov. 9.

Viruses dwindle, but impact rises Although the overall number of viruses
being detected each month is falling, the severity of the viruses being
written is increasing. This year's "Code Red" and "Nimda" worms are
perfect examples of this trend, according to Vincent Gullotto, senior
director of McAfee AVERT Labs.

Companies Draw Fire for Removing 'Offensive' Postings. Yahoo's message
boards are erupting with the kind of free-flowing, impassioned
discussions the Internet's creators always dreamed of, with postings
about practically every aspect of the hunt for terrorists, the capture
of Kabul and mysterious plane crashes. But what's also revealing is
what is being deleted.

their online activities are not protected by U.S. medical privacy
rules, a report released on Monday said. The Bush administration

Will hackers keep the cyberpeace? Six days after the attacks on the
World Trade Center and Pentagon, a major European hacker group issued an
unorthodox plea to the rest of the computer underground for cyberpeace.
"We face this power of destruction and feel helpless," a statement on
the Web site of the Germany-based Chaos Computer Club said. "However,
we believe in the power of communication, a power that has always
prevailed in the end and is a more positive force than hatred."

Will hackers make a fool of Larry Ellison? One of the first things they
teach you in the Journalists' School of Hard Knocks is to always leave
yourself an out. Facts are facts but only to an extent. When it comes
right down to it, few are always, provably true. And what seems like
truth today may be reduced to "yesterday's confusion" as soon as
tomorrow.

The Net Effect: How Not to Fight Terror Box cutters, some flight
training and a lot of determination. Although it now seems clear that
the hijackers of September 11 had the support of an international terror
organization, the real lesson is that it is frighteningly easy for a
small number of intelligent people, acting together, to do a tremendous
amount of damage.
