BadTrans worm threatens web disruption

A new mass-mailing computer virus is reportedly
spreading quickly among UK web users.

The BadTrans.B worm can execute itself without the
need for clicking on its attachment.

It also installs a Trojan Horse program that logs
users' keystrokes.

Another invasion of privacy comes with its ability to
reply to unread messages in recipients' inboxes.

The rogue email arrives with a variety of subject
lines and attachment names.

Anti-virus firm Message Labs says BadTrans.B is
spreading rapidly after debuting in the UK at the end
of last week.

They add that its particular combination of
characteristics gives rise for real concern.

Chief technology officer Mark Sunner says: "BadTrans.B
is propagating as quickly as any virus we have seen.

"The fact that it can log private details has huge
implications for personal and corporate
confidentiality."

The worm is a variant of a virus first seen in April.
