"We know these centers and offices have absolutely no connection with the resistance and the military wings of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, but we had to do something to demonstrate to the Americans that we are serious about fighting violence." The official, who demanded that his name not be mentioned, said the PA was facing an exceptional situation due to unprecedented American pressure. "After the 11 September attacks in the US, the Americans have come to view everything and anything Islamic as anathema. They don't like Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, and they insisted that we try to narrow Hamas horizons, or else they would lump the PA with two organizations." He pointed out that the closure of some 40 charities, offices, and youth clubs run by Islamists was a temporary measure pending a return to normalcy. "I assure you that these institutions would be reopened once American and Zionist pressure is mitigated." Asked if the closure would lead to the ending of resistance attacks on the Israeli occupation, the PA official said "by no means." "It is only a pressure tactic, the Americans like this, they pressured us to take action. We told them that these offices are involved in social and cultural activities, not in violence, but they wouldn't listen." Asked if Israel was satisfied with the closure of Islamist institutions, the official said "absolutely not, even if Arafat arrested half of the Palestinian people and closed all the mosques in Palestine, Sharon wouldn't stop his campaign against us, he uses the issue of violence and terror as a pretext. He himself is one of the greatest terrorists in this world." The official went on "violence is really not the issue. Sharon wants one thing from us, to give up most or all of rights and to accept occupation and apartheid." According to Islamist sources, the PA security agencies have so far closed more than 40 Islamist-run institutions, including several charities which offers regular food allowances to the poor and the needy. Some of the closed institutions are funded by the PA itself. ===== Send us a letter to the editor at: iapinfo@yahoo.com _________________________________ Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP) 10661 South Roberts Rd, Suite 202 Palos Hills, IL 60465 Tel: 708 974 3380 / Fax: 708 974 3389 /Pager: 1 800 916 8286 http://www.iap.org> E-mails: iapinfo@iap.org OR iapinfo@yahoo.com thr 026 Palestine-PA-Islamists /WRD/ PA official: "We did it under duress" Al-Khalil, Dec 19, IRNA -- A prominent PA official and a close confidant of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has admitted that the latest PA campaign against Islamist-run charitable societies and educational and athletic centers was carried out "under duress."
