2001 a year of worms, Trojans and viruses

Ananova, 12/27/2001
<a href="http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_476362.html?menu=news.technology">http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_476362.html?menu=news.technology>

Experts say 2001 has seen an unprecedented threat to business and home
users from computer viruses.

The year saw almost 12000 new viruses, worms and Trojan Horses.

Many of these possessed the potential to clog-up computer systems
worldwide.

Antivirus software vendors Sophos say Nimda topped its charts for the
year's most virulent computer virus. It was one of just two viruses to
account for half of all reports to the firm's helpdesk by the end of
November.

The infamous Code Red worm did not make it into the top ten, despite
causing sufficient alarm to elicit a prediction of web shut down from
the White House.

Nimda's place at the top of the chart reflects the fact that it is more
ingenious than most where it comes to finding new victims. Unlike most
of its peers, Nimda could run automatically without the need for an
ill-advised mouse click.

Sircam featured second on most anti-virus firms lists; by virtue of its
ability to randomly select and re-distribute private documents.

Earlier outbreaks established a trend for spreading as email attachments masquerading
as lurid photographs of celebrities. February's Kournikova virus was soon followed
by Naked Wife and Lopez,
the latter a variant of the infamous LoveLetter worm.

However May's Homepage worm sought to replicate itself by purporting to
be nothing more than a website recommendation.

Unsurprisingly Sophos is pessimistic about the year ahead. Senior
technology consultant Graham Cluley suggests that 2002 will see even
more virus activity, not least because more of us will finally upgrade
to always-on web access.
