The 5th Special Forces Group team provided coordinates that led a circling B-52 to drop a 2,000-pound satellite-guided bomb within 100 yards of the soldiers' position, according to preliminary findings. There was speculation that the bomb might have malfunctioned or that the bomber crew made a mistake. Nineteen soldiers were wounded in the incident. Air Force General Richard Myers today said only that the investigation isn't complete but procedures used to call in air strikes were changed after the incident. ``Actions were taken immediately,'' Myers said. ``We just tightened up procedures. The investigation was not complete at the time but there are ways to check and double-check your work and there were improvements made,'' Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, told a Pentagon press briefing. The incident occurred during U.S. attacks on Taliban targets north of Kandahar. The bomb used, a Joint Direct Attack Munition, is equipped with a Boeing Co. guidance system hits within 30 feet of its intended target 80 to 85 percent of the time, a former Pentagon tester said at the time. The ``friendly fire'' casualties to date in the Afghan conflict are small compared to the 1991 Persian Gulf War when 35 of 148 U.S. troops killed in action were hit by U.S. fire. Eleven of those U.S. deaths occurred during accidental strikes by U.S. aircraft against ground forces. Of 467 troops wounded, 72 were hit by friendly fire. ------------------------ Yahoo!
