Jumbos know how to play games, too
Strategic Gaming Society has enthusiasm, but lacks funding

Of the many causes, clubs, and organizations on campus, there is one club in particular that gains very little publicity or acknowledgement.

The Strategic Gaming Society, or the SGS, is enjoying its second year on campus and so far, membership has been strong.

"We have about 15 to 20 regular members who show up for most meetings," said SGS President Mike Sharrow. "Our only real purpose is to bring together people who enjoy playing strategic games such as Risk, Magic, and Vampire."

The fact that the society gains little publicity distresses Treasurer Erik Strelzoff.

"We only have enough money to make about four posterings a year around campus," he said.

Because of short funds, the SGS does not have the opportunity to advertise like many other organizations on campus. Still, they welcome as many members as they can get.

The SGS meetings are fairly simple and consist mostly of playing games. Once the meeting begins, certain issues are brought up, such as funds, upcoming events, and other subjects. Once these are out of the way, a vote is taken on which board games to bust out of the closet. Once a consensus is reached, two unfortunate souls, against their will, are sent into "the closet," from which they bring the chosen games.

Future plans for the society include an upcoming multigame tournament. Players will be invited from all across campus to converge upon a meeting place and play a number of different games. Admission may be charged, but there will be a prize that goes to the victor.

Finally, the SGS can now be accessed online. Member George Kullavan has created a home page for the society. At present, the official Strategic Gaming Society home page can be accessed at the following URL: http://www.tufts.edu/~gkullava/sgs.html. It includes information on the society, tournaments in and about Boston, upcoming events, links to the gamemakers' home pages, and a list of games owned by the society.

If you are interested in joining, the Strategic Gaming Society meets every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the Schwartz Room of the Campus Center (Room 209).
