Japan:
- Assumed that since they could not break their codes nobody else could
- Used repeated codewords unchanged for too long
- Fell to deceptions (open communications about status reflected in codewords in messages)
- Assumed language differences would assist them, but US had Japanese speaking codebreakers
- Key distribution and reuse issues
- Initialization problems and traffic analysis
