24 October 1999 Australian Campaign Office Received Threat, is Attacked
An Australian campaign office received a fax threatening to launch
cyber-attacks as a form of political protest should its campaign prove
successful. The office's telecommunications systems also experienced an
attack, which affected email and the call center.

22 October 1999 Echelon Protest
Last Thursday's protest against Echelon, in which activists hoped to
overload the surveillance system by sending emails peppered with certain
keywords, would have had a stronger impact if e-mails had been encrypted,
according to the webmaster of a hacker journal.

21 October 1999 MGM Counters Phony Stock Information Posting
A phony posting on a Yahoo message board, purporting to be from the
former chairman of MGM, advised investors to sell MGM stock. MGM posted
a message warning investors that the first message did not come from
the company's former chairman, now a board member.

21 October 1999 DOE Computer Security a Problem
A former Department of Energy (DOE) official said that security policies
were often ignored within the department, and that DOE officials did
nothing to prevent espionage, even as they knew it was occurring. The
present director of DOE's Office of Security and Emergency operations
said that the department has exhibited "a lack of attention to ...

20 October 1999 Bush Campaign Site Defaced
George W. Bush's campaign site was defaced last week, but the altered
page was available to viewers for only a few minutes before a backup
system restored it to its original state.
