White House Backs Down on Anti-Drug'Cookies'
Directs Ad Firm to Destroy Secretly Acquired Data

June 22, 2000

By James Gordon Meek

WASHINGTON (APBnews.com) -- Stung by accusations of Big Brother
anti-drug tactics, the White House drug office retreated from
its controversial practice of covertly inserting tracking
software into the computers of Internet users who searched for
drug information online.

An Internet advertising effort by the Office of National Drug
Control Policy has been placing digital "cookies" into the hard
drives of those who land on Web pages with anti-drug banner ads.
