Per the message sent by Ozair:

Why am I not surprised.

I understood that. My point was that if they had no common enemy, they
would probably fall apart on their own.

This is, of course, why the PLO spends so much of its time, effort, and
money trying to convince the American policital system to reduce support
for Israel. It is a very good strategy at some level, but they face
serious problems with it because the American political scene is and has
been dominated by Christians who believe they have more in common with
Jews than Moslems - presumably because Christianity split off from
Judaism 2000 years ago (give or take) while Ismael and Abraham split off
500 years ago (I probably got this one wrong - but I'm rusty these
days). Israel understands these issues as well, which is one of the
reasons it tries to keep strong ties to China and Russia - figuring that
if the PLO ever does get the US political system to switch there are
alternatives. Of course this creates problems in US relations because
the US tends to disagree with these other nations from time to time.

Actually, I think that there was a time several thousand years ago - for
a few hundred years - when the nation of Israel was a force to be
reconed with all on their own - but you were probably referring to more
modern times. I think that the PLO understands that creating a
tumultuous environment causes problems for Israel, but I think that the
PLO leadership has intentionally created this situation to the great
harm of its own people. I also think that this is in their plan.

If the Palestinian people were prosperous without having what Israel
calls Jerusalem it would create serious problems for the PLO's ultimate
goal of taking back the city they call Palestine. People who have
nothing have nothing to lose. By creating unnecessary conflict, the PLO
keeps its own people poor and under its control. If the billions of
dollars that the PLO has were to be committed to educating the
Palestinian people, creating jobs, and working toward prosperity, the
Palestinian people would not want to sacrifice what they gained as
easily and it would be harder to get suicide bombers or retain strong
political support for wars.

What I think the PLO misses is that economic prosperity for its people
would also create a situation where they could build up enough resources
(politically and economically) to be more effective than they are today.
One of the reasons the US political system will not sway in the PLO's
direction very far is probably that the PLO is not helping to create
wealth, but only destroying it. In many ways this is similar to the
feelings toward the Talaban, which is destroying historical cultural
statues under the guise of religion. In the West, most people believe
that anyone who destroys in the name of religion is a heratic. Of
course they do this in the West from time to time as well, but that's
different because it's them doing it...

Osair - I greatly welcome your comments on my - probably full of errors
and omissions - off the cuff analysis.
