According to news reports (I didn't hear it personally), the US
President today used the word "Crusade" to describe the US action
against terrorism.

This invokes the ill thought out and horribly cruel attempts by the
Christian crusaders of the middle ages to wipe out other religious
faiths.

It seems to me to be something that would be intollerable to the vast
majority of the US and world public. It also plays directly into the
hands of the terrorists and all of the marginal nations on the border
between terrorism and what we in the west call civilization who call
this a religious war that will pit Christianity against Islam.

If this is what it turns out to be, then it is certain to fail just as
the last crusades failed, and of course the US public will not likely
support it.

I for one find it offensive and hope that Mr. Bush didn't in fact say it.
