Those individuals ruthless enough to carry out last weeks attacks, and those sinister enough to support, fund, and profit from such tragedies, are not motivated by some lack of appreciation of how nice it is to live in America, or under institutions that promote democracy and human liberties. Indeed, it is precisely the contrast that the "west" enjoys, vis-a-vis their deplorably living conditions, that motivate these attacks. To what degree their sorry conditions are a function of "their own failed systems" or "the west's oppressive policies" is a matter of debate. But "debate" was not on the minds of those who attacked the World Trade Center, and sadly, it is not on the minds of the almost anyone at this point. The problem we face is complex, in many dimensions. Just as this "terror network" has many different branches, so it has many different roots. Broadly, I can see a criminal network, motivated by financial gain, being a major element in this situation, and exploiting the "radical Islamic" (for want of a better catch-all phrase) hatred of US/western policies as the instrument of their activities. What actions punish one will not necessarily punish the other, and what appeases one will not necessarily appease the other. A complex situation, calling for a complex response. ____tony____ Tony Bartoletti 925-422-3881 <azb@llnl.gov> Information Operations, Warfare and Assurance Center Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Livermore, CA 94551-9900 ------------------ http://all.net/ Your use of Yahoo!
