SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF TERRORISM

The attack on the World Trade Center may be considered as one of those
unimaginable horrors that has long been propheticized.  To look for the
solution to the problem of terrorism, we need to seek to understand the
roots of the problem.  A simplified solution based on revenge and
punishment of those responsible for such a hideous act using a military
option will not resolve the problem.  On the contrary, it may even
backfire to generate a worse situation and may escalate to a condition
beyond control. 

No doubt that life is the most precious thing to anyone.  He will give
up everything to secure his life no matter how much he may believe that
the life after death is better than this worldly life.  If and When he
is ready to sacrifice his life, it is because that he is really
desperate.  Poverty, misery, and above all the feeling of injustice can
make a person susceptible to offer his life with the illusion of
becoming a martyr for a cause and commit the suicidal act of terrorism. 

Through a military action, it is impossible to kill off and eliminate
all the existing terrorists.  Even though one could do so, there is no
use since soon after new generations of terrorists will grow in its
place, if the root cause of terrorism has not been eliminated. 
Therefore, the lasting solution to the problem of terrorism is to try
sincerely end the existing misery and injustice which prevail in the
world globally.  It may be done through the concept of good global
governance. 

The concept of good governance in the globalized world is to bring
prosperity to the peoples of the world in general under the vision of
unity of humanity.  Prosperity is a process of satisfying the spiritual
as well as physical needs of humankind.  The concept of Unity of
humankind differs to uniformity and calls for establishment of unity in
diversity.  It involves a dynamic and organic process of bringing
friendship and cooperation amongst the peoples of the world based on the
principles of justice and compassion while recognizing and appreciating
their inherent differences. 

Economic assistance alone, as the past experiences have shown, is not
the solution.  It must go hand in hand with promotion of moral
standards, which are basically common amongst all the peoples
irrespective of their nationality, ethnical or religious backgrounds.  A
universal campaign in promoting human virtues and the golden rules
valued by all the peoples of the world must become a world wide project. 

We need to support, REFORM and utilize the only international system
that we posses namely the United Nations.  We need to operate within a
global system which is respected universally.  The moral and economic
assistance to the peoples may be given through the system of a reformed
United Nations.  Such a UN should operate through the vision of its
founders who proclaimed "We the PEOPLES of the world..." and not as it
is today, "We the GOVERNMENTS of the world...".  The Non Governmental
Organizations and Civil Societies should participate in the MONITORING
of the process of the development of their state of well-being. 

Now is the most appropriate opportunity for this to occur.  The world
leaders for the first time are uniting around a problem that could be
theirs as well.  Thus they have declared to be united around the cause
of the elimination of terrorism.  The world community should take
advantage of this political unification to eliminate INJUSTICE, which is
the root cause of all the world problems including poverty and misery. 

Should this ideal come into realization, the lives of those lost in the
World Trade Center tragedy will not have been lost in vain, but they may
be considered as martyrs whose death left an impact to shake the
consciousness of humanity and the world leaders to take serious and
sincere measures for the establishment of a new world order based on
justice and unity.  This new world order will consider the world as one
country and humankind its citizens.  In such a highly interdependent
world, the well-being of any nation depends on the well-being of all. 
The world can be metaphorized as a human body, its well being depends on
the well being of all of its organs. 

The United State has the possibility to lead the peoples of the world
into prosperity.  Let us pray that the present leaders have the insight
and become inspired to accomplish that mission. 

"O God! Let this American democracy become glorious in spiritual degrees
even as it has aspired to material degrees, and render this just
government victorious.  Confirm this revered nation to upraise the
standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the Most Great Peace,
to become thereby most glorious and praiseworthy among all the nations
of the world."
